On the morning of October 1, the National Flag Raising Ceremony of Sichuan Province for Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China was held at Tianfu Square of Chengdu. Peng Qinghua, Secretary of CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Director of Standing Committee of Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress, Wu Shezhou, Political Commissar of Western War Zone, Yin Li, Deputy Secretary of CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Governor, Ke Zunping, Chairman of the CPPCC Sichuan Provincial Committee, Deng Xiaogang, Deputy Secretary of CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee, Zhan Houshun, Deputy Commander of Western War Zone and Commander of the Air Force of Western War Zone, and Zhou Xiaozhou, Director of Rehabilitation Office of Chengdu Military Region, attended the ceremony with the public.
In the early morning at Tianfu Square, colored flags were flying in the fine rain. The banner reading “Warmly Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China” was noticeable in the solemn and lively climate. Around 7 o’clock, in the Song of Motherland, I Love You China, My People My Country and other songs, the mass representatives from all walks of life arrived at the square in succession in the morning breeze and autumn rain for the ceremony, standing in queues solemnly with great respect and best wishes for the great motherland. They were waiting for the sacred moment.
Around 8 o’clock, the ceremony started. Forming a queue to the north of the flagpole, 10 honor guards were waiting to greet the national flag. Holding guns, the 36 “Chengdu National Flag Guard” members escorted the Five-Star Red Flag to the flag tower along the Renmin Road East with uniform and determined steps. Then, a flag-bearer and the flag guard leader marched onto the foundation of flagpole, while the flag guard members standing with respect facing the flag. “Salute to the national flag!” the leader shouted, and flag guard members raised their guns as a salute.
The band started to play the March of the Volunteers, and the flag raisers waved the flag to the air. Then the bright Five-Star Red Flag flied in the wind. All were singing the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China, following the flag rising slowly with their eyes. Forty six seconds later, the flag was at the top of the pole, and there burst into loud applause and cheers. “I love you China!” “May our country be thriving and prosperous!” The masses present were waving the flags in their hand to express their love and wishes for the great motherland.
Gazing at the Five-Star Red Flag flying up there, everybody was excited and proud, saying that they would cherish the hard-earned happy life today, advocate leadership of Communist Party of China, work harder and turn the love for our country into the action to contribution to reform and opening-up of this province, to co-compose the Sichuan chapter for realizing the Chinese dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Leaders from the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee, Standing Committee of Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress, provincial government, Provincial Committee of the CPPCC, provincial court, provincial procuratorate, provincial military command, Sichuan Armed Police Corps , Officers College of PAP and Chengdu government, veteran representatives, persons in charge of the provincial government agencies (units), agencies and public institutions under the central government in Sichuan, part of the provincial research and development institutions, institutions of higher learning and the state-owned enterprises, persons in charge of the provincial committee and provincial association of industry and commerce of each of the democratic parties, representatives of patriots without party affiliation, citizen representatives of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas Chinese representatives, and representatives of people from all walks of life and at all levels attended the ceremony. On the morning of October 1 at Tianfu Square, ten thousand and more people from all walks of life gathered here for the national flag raising ceremony to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. At 7:50 in the morning, the national flag guard escorted the Five-Star Red Flag to the flag tower at Tianfu Square with uniform and determined steps. In the impassioning and magnificent March of the Volunteers played by the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra, at 8:08 a.m., the colored flag slowly ascended to the top of the pole.
Waiting all night
The retired auntie just wanted to have a closer look of the flag raising
“I've been waiting for more than 6 hours, only for witnessing the moment of raising national flag and extending wishes for our country in singing.” At 6 o’clock in the morning when the ceremony was nearly two hours away, the reporter saw that the square was already packed with ten thousand and more masses. Pupils wearing “red scarf” were waving their flags at the front of the queue, all smiling with happiness. Students from the Class 6 Grade 3 of Paotongshu Primary School were there voluntarily. They’ve been doing it for 3 years in a row. “This is the patriotism theme activities of our class. Our students are here for watching the flag raising ceremony every year,” their head teacher Shui Lian told the reporter. Kid Li Danhanduo living in Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone, to watch the ceremony personally, got up at 2 o’clock in the morning. “To participating in the flag raising ceremony could both develop their patriotic feeling and celebrate the festival in the special way,” Duan Tingting, mother of Li Danhanduo, said to the reporter, “I would work harder and improve day by day, to make my own contribution to the better and prosperous country,” Ying Licheng from Class 6 Grade 2 of Sichuan University Affiliated Primary School, was so excited saying that while waving the national flag in his hand.
“I drove here with my families from Zigong City. We’ve been wandering around the square and waiting since 9 o’clock last night, only for a closer look at of the national flag,” Zigong retiree Li Qiulin said in excitement, “although we are Sichuan native and come to Chengdu frequently, this is the first time for us to watch the flag raising ceremony and express wishes for our country. I’m so moved.”
The ceremony was about to begin, and it started to rain. Despite the cold in the morning of early autumn, everybody was so passionate. You could easily tell their joy and excitement.
Sing and cheer
At 9:08, the Five-Star Red Flag solemnly ascended
At 7:35 a.m., Sichuan Symphony Orchestra composed of 70 played patriotic songs like I Love You China, My Motherland, Ode to Red Flag and My People My Country. People were ardent.
At 7:50 a.m., the sacred national flag raising ceremony kicked off. The honor guard consisting of 10 armed police soldiers formed a queue and waited to great the flag. Later, the national flag guard, 36 imposing soldiers, escorted the flag eastwards through the Shudu Avenue to Tianfu Square in the Song of Motherland with uniform steps. The flag raisers marched towards the flag tower carrying the flag. Then, a word of command: “Raise the flag, play and sing the national anthem, and salute!”
At 8:07 a.m., in the magnificent national anthem, everybody stood seriously, the chorus covering 100 primary school students, middle school students and college students of Chengdu sang accompanied by the symphony orchestra, and the flag raiser unfolded the flag in the air. Witnessed by everybody, the bright Five-Star Red Flag ascended, presenting the best festive wishes to the great motherland. At 8:08 a.m., the flag was at the top of the pole, and there burst into loud applause and cheers.
“Sing a song of praise to my dear motherland, which is now on the way to prosperity and strength….” In the familiar Song of Motherland played by the symphony orchestra, the national flag guard retreated. People couldn’t help but sing. "It's the first time for me to join in the outdoor performance to celebrate the birthday of our motherland, so honored,” harp player Li Ke has joined in Sichuan Symphony Orchestra for 9 years, and this is his debut at the flag raising ceremony at Tianfu Square, “we are proud to present wishes to our country and I hope to perform more.”
Feel deeply proud
College student filed with tears during singing the national anthem
“Happy birthday, the People’s Republic of China!” “Wish Chengdu better and better!” In the background music Today Is Your Birthday, the masses were expressing their wishes for the motherland. Liu Xinyu, a freshman in Chengdu, was proud: “I can’t help crying my eyes out when seeing the flag rising and hearing everyone signing the national anthem. Ten thousand and more people gathering here from different places to watch the national flag raising ceremony is in itself a feelings, a belief and a strength.
“I was born in the year of founding of the People’s Republic of China. I’m so honored to grow up with the motherland. So lucky that I live in the new era,” the 70-year-old veteran cadre Wu Wancheng who was born on the day of founding of the People’s Republic of China sighed with emotion watching the flying Five-Star Red Flag above the square, “I’m confident that our country is to be stronger and more prosperous in the future!”
The Five-Star Red Flag flied in the wind, serving as a beautiful decoration to the sky over Chengdu. After the flag-raising ceremony, people lingered at the square for a long time, unwilling to leave. They were busy taking photos with their cameras and mobile phones, to record this moment.
